A coda for the Sixth Doctor and Peri,
This review is from: Her Final Flight (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
"When the Doctor lands on Refiloe, he's not impressed.
"In fact, he doesn't intend to stay for more than just a few minutes.
"But someone has decided that the TARDIS has made her final flight.
"Someone whose future depends on the Doctor's death."
"Her Final Flight", by Julian Shortman, was originally one of Big Finish's subscriber-only freebies, and is therefore only a single CD story, at two standard episodes in length. The Doctor lands on Refiloe and, after falling from a cliff, wakes up to find himself being tended to by Peri, who he had left behind on Thoros Beta in "The Trial of a Time Lord" / "Mindwarp".
As such, the story deals with the emotional consequences of the Doctor's abandonment of his companion, and Peri's quest to return home, with good performances by leads Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant. In many ways, it ties up the loose ends left by "Trial", although to some extent the Doctor's reconciliation with Peri takes second place to his misadventures in the primitive town in which he now finds himself, where the TARDIS has been taken to the temple and hailed as a vessel of the Gods, whilst the Doctor suffers periodic blackouts during which he imagines that he is being tortured.
This short story climaxes as the Dotor is confronted once again with the worst possible fate for his companion, in a manner that echoes the events of Trial. However, the emotional impact of the story is somewhat undermined by the resolution of the story's framing device, and at the end of the day certain matters are left frustratingly unresolved.
