This review is from: Takers [DVD] (DVD)As one of the other reviewers has said this was never going to win oscars. In fact there is almost nothing original in here at all. I did start to wonder whether there would be a single scene not ripped wholesale from another film. There may be but I suspect otherwise. Thing is..
..if you have a really good cast (and believe it or not even Chris Brown is good in this and everyone is just right for the role they play), a slick story, good cinematography and those scenes have been lifted from films as diverse and as brilliant as Heat, The Italian Job, Casino Royale, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, True Romance and a whole story line from the Wire (they didn't just take Idris Elba they shot a whole Strinegr Bell scene with Matt Dillon replacing Dominic West) it doesn't matter. In fact the makers have culled hesit movies for every good idea they could lay their hands on and put them into a really good story.
Five brilliantly gifted and inventive armed robbers rob a major bank with hi tech equipment, explosives, automatic rifles and an audacious plan. Dillon's stereotypical haunted obsessive cop finds a chink in their previously impenetrable security. At the same time Ghost (played by "TI" who is also the producer) is released from prison. He is a former member of the gang and singularly bad news but he offers them one more job with a high reward. Reluctantly they agree and embark on another incredibly bold heist whilst unbeknownst to them Ghost's colleagues (Russian mobsters) are also lining up their own job.
What ensues has something for everyone (at least everyone who likes heist movies) gunfights, cool bars, hot babes in hot tubs, slick dialogue, gangsters playing grand pianos, cops having family metldowns, a parkour footchase, more shootouts, fist fights, explosions, Mexican standoffs, cocktails and good whisky being knocked back by men in sharply tailored suits and more shootouts.
Extras-wise; there is a commentary and TI has made a music promo video. There is and English soundtrack and an italian alternative, English description for the visually impaired and subtitles in hindi, english and italian.
There are also some grown up storylines. This isn't speed. Overall this is really good fun. It is derivative but so are most films and this one does what it does very very well. Probably a nine out of ten.
