This review is from: The Chronicles Of Narnia (Audio CD)
I have always admired the work of Geoffrey Burgon. The music on this disc is in 'Quality television vernacular' style and is superbly suited and tailored to its function. In his work he always gave more than his fee required.
These suites were condensed from the working material used for the dramas, and one has to see and hear the dramas themselves to appreciate how beautifully Burgon worked the music into the action and thought in them. This is not, and could not possibly be, represented on this disc, but, watch and listen to the dramas on the screen, and you will realise that he was superb in his response to directors and sound editors needs. Never the less, this is a disc well worth having.
I hate to use that hackneyed old phrase, but he was indeed a " national treasure" and, like others in the sad cultural atmosphere of the UK, deserved a great deal more recognition than he got.
I have heard, and I don't know whether it is true or not, that he often wanted to break free at times from his dramatic work to write other, more serious things, but sadly, was largely unable to, and the tale that he found great and rare pleasure one day by overhearing someone singing his 'Aslan' theme whilst queing at a supermarket check-out says a great deal about him.
The technical quality of the CD that I received is flawless, the performance by the Philharmonia is warm and inspired, and, of course, it is directed beautifully by Geoffrey Burgon himself.
