Bargain of the Century,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Yamaha AS500 Integrated Amplifier with 85w X 2 High Power Output (discontinued by manufacturer) (Electronics)
This is a great amp. Originaly I was going to buy a Cambridge Audio for £450 but kept being drawn back to the sparkling review of the AS500 on <...> and the user reviews on amazon. Anyway, I decided that diue to financial constraints to go with the Yamaha. I am running it through Tannoy Mercury V4s with a Pro-ject Experience Basic+ turntable and a Yamaha CDS300BL Compact Disc Player and it sounds great. It has great tonal control with the bass, treble & loudness controls, but I pretty much play everything with the direct signal button in, bypassing the tone circuit altogether. It is clear, punchy and has more than enough power in reserve. I would seriously upsett the neighbours if I turned it up much beyond 3/10 very often. For £250 this amp is a steal and if I put another system in another room, I would get another one of these without a second thought

thanks for useful review.
i'm wondering if i can use this amp to play from digital sources ie mp3 and music on my pc/laptop - possibly via a wifi dongle..
there seems no mention of USB input .
otherwise i just want my freeview tv/radio and a cd player to connect to it.
many thanks for any ideas.

There isn't a USB input in the amp. There is a socket at the back which will take a yamaha dock in which you can sit an ipod. I am running (as well as my turntable) a Yamaha CDS300 CD player through this amp which does have a USB on the front panel and this is where I plug my apple dock for my iPod. I believe that the yamaha ipod dock with connector for the amp costs about £40

The CDS300 is a fine CD player and a great match for the amp. The addition of the USB input gives it an extra trick up it's sleeve. If you were looking for a CD player in addition to the amp I would heartily recommend it.
