2.0 out of 5 stars Badly outdated, 28 Aug. 2010
This review is from: Google Hacks: Tips & Tools for Finding and Using the World's Information (Paperback)
I bought this book because I am suffering from Information overload, both at work and also from social networks and blogs. So I was looking at a way to automate my life - I wanted to do a Larry Wall and find some code that would carry out all of the routine tasks withou me having to lift a finger. So Google Hacks looked like the book to tell me how to do this. All the power of the Google search engine to find and categorise the important information. Google's Blogger to deal with the Blogs. Gmail to deal with my e-mail and also automated ways of dealing with RSS feeds.

Sadly the only thing I learnt from this version of the book is that the APIs are where to get started. Even then it talks about ways of using the APIs that are outdated. Google has an amazing inventory of APIs for all the different Google functions including the search, finance, mail, and many others including products in development. The book is so out of date that it describes a completely outdated method of using even the search API. The part on the Blogger API and using Atom posts is irrelevant if you use a Browser tool like Scribefire. There is a section on Froogle which no longer exists. The list of outdated features is endless, and O'Reilly seem to have created new books for each of the Google Tools such as Android rather than update this Hack book. So I am afraid I cannot recommend this book except for someone who might use it as a history lesson.
