This review is from: Wagner - 'Der Ring' Ohne Worte / 'The Ring' Without Words (Audio CD)
...but if anyone likes this they should follow it up by investing some effort into listening to the operas themselves (and it WILL take some effort)
This recording has some disappointing omissions, but to be fair, a single CD is well under 10% of the work. The biggest problem with any orchestral rendering of The Ring Cycle is the obvious one that only half the musical sound is present, no matter how good the recording - the orchestra and conductor cannot make up for the impact and drama of the singers being missing.
Irrespective of these reservations and the limited aims of any cd like this, it has to be judged on its own terms. I'm only giving it 3 (maybe 4)stars because I didn't think that there was as much energy or lushness as there could have been, and I don't think it was as captivating as my own first introduction to The Ring - which was George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra's "Orchestral Highlights of The Ring" on LP.
