Brilliant First Novel,
This review is from: 01 Tiger Wars (The Falcon Chronicles) (Hardcover)
I have always enjoyed Steve Backshall's travel and nature writing, so I was interested to see how well he would make the transition to fiction. The answer is, seamlessly.
`Tiger Wars' is a fast paced, exciting, adventure beautifully written with a tightly crafted plot. It is set in parts of the world that the author obviously has a deep affinity with, and he draws on his extensive knowledge and experience to paint a rich, colourful background.
I warmed to the young protagonists Saker and Sinter, their developing friendship is touching and believable. They both have strong characters, and it is evident from early on that Saker has met his match. The resulting narrative will appeal equally to boys and girls - no helpless females here!
The novel may have been aimed at older children, and will certainly be loved by Mr Backshall's devotees, but there is more than enough to engage an adult. It's a book that will make shared story times a pleasure, and encourage reluctant readers to take off on their own. A real page turner, and one I didn't want to put down.
