Brilliant! THE zeitgeist novel for the New Labour generation,
This review is from: One Day (Hardcover)
I urge everyone over 40 to read this fantastic book. Through its wonderful central characters, Dexter and Emma (Dex and Em), it perfectly captures the late Thatcher/New Labour zeitgeist. A time when life was a "free for all" with a sense of endless possibility. Where we all wanted too much but really hadn't a clue what was good for us. When very little was permanent, even less was planned and we muddled through our personal and professional lives in a state of perpetual chaos and anxiety.
It is rare for this era to be depicted without a hint of cynicism. 5 stars for that alone. Dex and Em's journey through life is hilariously and movingly told. I weirdly felt these people were my friends by the end of the book and I already miss them. Somebody PLEASE write the screenplay and put them on the big screen.
