This review is from: FLY BIRD FLY - VERY BEST OF MUZSIKÁS (Audio CD)
I first heard Muzsikas in the early 90s and owned a couple of their albums on casette. Muzsikas are well known in Hungary, including at that time had a following in all ages including young people. They play traditional eastern european music on a range of instruments including fiddle, percussion, bagpipes, bouzouki, dulcimer and double bass, and also feature one of the great vocalists of the time in Marta Sebestyen, so you are in for a spicey world of sound. The music is often wild and fast, played with great energy, at other times crooning and emotive. They were apparently part of the Hungarian House Dance movement (not the four to the floor variety)and I also owned an outstanding compilation casette of one of the annual gatherings (on the Hungaroton label). Muzsikas sounded more refined than some of the offerings on the House Dance tape, yet re-acquainting myself with this music after the absence of a decade I realise how great it was - if you like Hawk and a Hacksaw you'll appreciate the authentic skill and energey collected here. The CD is well packaged with liner notes by Joe Boyd of Hannibal records, and well sequenced too, avoiding the jarring leaps in quality that often spoil compillations.
