This review is from: Breville VKJ367 Brita Filter Hot Cup with Variable Dispenser (Kitchen & Home)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Breville Hot Cup really only performs one simple task, quickly delivering a cup of freshly boiled filtered water, but it does it really well. The unit seems substantial and solidly made, the polished stainless steel faceplates give it a quality feel and wipe clean surprisingly easily. The inbuilt Brita filter-funnel means this model is notably bigger than its predecessor with a footprint bigger than most kettles. However, the filtering option is a worthwhile addition and you can easily remove the funnel if you don't need to use it - which speeds up refilling too. It takes about three refills of the filter-funnel to fill the main tank and carrying the whole Hot Cup unit to the sink is quite clumsy and heavy. I found it much easier to use a small jug for refills and you can safely top it up while it's busy boiling the next cup of water.

The best thing about the Hot Cup is its speed and although on a chilly morning the first cup of the day might take a few seconds more than Breville's quoted 40 seconds the subsequent cups are usually faster. I've got better things to do with my time than stand and wait for kettles to boil but with the Hot Cup you simply place your cup on the drip-tray and press the button - by the time you drop in a teabag, add sugar (optional) and fetch the milk from the fridge the Hot Cup is pouring the water.

The dial used to select the quantity of water dispensed is trickier to adjust than it should be but works well - the amounts dispensed range from approximately 6floz to 12floz (170ml to 340ml) at a time. There's no room under the nozzle for teapots but it is high enough to fit a mini one-person cafetiere, so you're not entirely limited to instant coffee. The height between nozzle and cup also means the pouring action can be quite splashy and you'll want to keep your hands clear while it's dispensed. There's also a bit of steamy huffing and puffing as it finishes pouring, this seems to happen as the heater section is refilled ready for the next cup. If you're dispensing several cups in quick succession the unit can also get quite hot, even around the buttons on top. It's worth bearing in mind it's really no safer than the average kettle, especially if you have younger kids in the house.

I'm not sure the Hot Cup is any kind of replacement for a kettle, it's no good for filling your saucepans or even teapots - but what it does, it does well. It's a great thing to have in a home office (I work from home and that's where mine has been very happily installed!) and might even suit some small business offices - although if everyone wants their cuppa at the same time you'll have to form an orderly queue in front of it, clutching your teabags! If your lifestyle requirements fit around the Hot Cup's capabilities then it's a real pleasure to have around for the quickest of quick cuppas.

I am so glad to get an estimate of the largest amount that this machine can dispense (340ml). Thank you
