Rather showing its age....,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Venice (Kindle Edition)
I first read, and hugely enjoyed, this book many years ago and bought the present version, as it was trumpeted as a 'new and revised edition'. Sadly, this is far from being the case. The book was originally published in 1960 and since then it has been 'revised' three times. The last occasion was in 1993 when the author confessed in her foreword that "I find I cannot really revise it." And so the book largely remains as it was written more than fifty years ago, making most of the observations of Venetian life curiously irrelevant for today's reader. The city of Venice might have changed little in the past 50 years, but its citizens, and life in general, has changed a great deal.
There are far better guides to Venice, but if you want to read how the city looked to one young and exceptionally talented travel writer in the year 1960, this is the book for you.

This review nails it. Nice book, well written, but hopelessly outdated.
