This review is from: Favourite Welsh Male Voice Choirs (Audio CD)
This is a great selection from the best of the Welsh Choirs and a good choice for a first disc. I prefer All-Male Voice Choirs unnaccompanied as a rule but at least the beautiful "Myfanwy" by the Treorchy Male Choir is given the tender respect it deserves without a backing on this CD. Unfortunately, the opening number, "Men of Harlech" is given a heavy over-working from a big brass band competing with two leading choirs. I found it ham-fisted. The voices are usually impressive enough in themselves. Don't be deterred though, because for the most part there is only a polite organ or piano to give them support and it doesn't spoil the overall recording.
Six of the songs are sung by the Treorchy Male Choir: Men of Harlech (combined with the Morriston Orpheus Choir), We'll Keep a Welcome, Sospan Fach, Easter Hymn, Battle Hymn of the Republic and Hymn from Finlandia. Eleven are sung by the Morriston Orpheus Choir: Men of Harlech (with Treorchy), The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, The Land of Song, Myfanwy, Swansea Town, Cwm Rhondda, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, Abide With Me and the Lord's Prayer. The Lily of the Valley is sung by the Duvant Male Choir, Diolch I'r Ior by Pontarddulais Male Choir and The Finnish Forset by Canoldir Male Choir. Finally, the Monmouthshire Massed Male Choir give full voice to Jacob's Ladder. It's terrific! Enjoy!
