Could be great but there are serious issues.,

This review is from: LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra (Green) (Toy)
We gave our son a LeapPad Ultra for his 7th Birthday. He is not a child who has played with video games before but has slowly taken to the device. He has had it for three weeks now. In general we are all happy with the available apps and believe they are good value (if more costly than those for apple or android platforms). The content is fun and educational. The device itself is of high quality and built like a tank.
Unfortunately there are some serious issues with the LeapPad Ultra. Firstly, as has been noted by others, the OS is slow. Apps and game play are responsive but the time it takes for content to load could be an issue for some children. Our son is patient and doesn't seem too bothered by this but he hasn't got access to any faster devices. We have come across one app (Solar Taxi) that would not work on our device without crashing. To be fair to Leapfrog they did arrange for us to exchange this app for another.
The two issues that have turned this review from four stars to two are:
Web access: The Zui Browser is a good idea and we are not bothered that the search facility is not yet ready (Christmas apparently). There is a good selection of appropriate youtube videos available to browse. Unfortunately we find that with longer clips the playback becomes choppy and the app eventually crashes (some sort of buffering issue?), either returning to the home screen or (more frustrating for a child) causing the device to freeze and need to be turned off and on again.
Stability: The device has twice crashed completely requiring it to be connected to a PC for a `tune up'. Sadly, post `tune up' all our son's game progress, photos and other files are lost. This has happened in spite of keeping up to date with the latest firmware (in fact the second time was this morning immediately following the latest firmware update).
There is a great device here waiting to get out. I just hope Leapfrog address the software issues before the hardware is superseded.
