This review is from: Quartet Is a Quartet (Audio CD)
This is an unusual entry on the MJQ's discography, as it consists of one side of the MJQ plus a side containing two other quartets. The MJQ stuff is pretty excellent, and features a remake of 'concorde' and a wonderfully groovy 'reuinion' blues featuring some great playing from Milt Jackson and John Lewis. Just drift on as they swap leads - marvellous.
The other quartets may depend on your taste. The music from the Quartetto Di Milani is modern sounding classic, and reminiscent of a 1960s avant-garde soundtrack, which I enjoyed a lot (I think it may been from a soundtrack). This band consists of 4 string players. The Hungarian Gypsy Quartet is folky music. It's actually quite pleasant, but again, sounds a lot like the sort of backing music you get in 1960s films which does make it sound dated.
Fans of the MJQ will enjoy the first 'side', but I'm not too sure about the other sides. Certainly an interesting experiment.
This appears to be a Japanese re-issue, and sadly, the original liner notes are reproduced so small that they are almost impossible to read. The insert is in Japanese. The sounds is pretty good.
