1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, 7 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dark Space (Kindle Edition)
I didn't make it to the third chapter. Under these circumstances, I normally wouldn't dream of submitting a review. But this book is just so bad.

Do not buy this, even for 77p. The prose is so stilted, clichéd and juvenile, that it started to hurt my eyeballs and brain.

I usually trust the aggregate Amazon score, but for this to get 4.5 stars, something is wrong.

There are a suspicious amount of 4 and 5 star reviews made by people who have either only reviewed this book, or only reviewed another couple of items suspiciously in the days before reviewing this book. With Modern IP masking, the ability to create multiple accounts, and the fact it is cheap, means the author or his friends are pretty clearly buying this book over and over to review and inflate its score.

The science fiction reading community is not as dim to give a book as broken as this such a legitimate high score. You can see most 'normal' accounts are giving this 3 stars max.

I neither have that many friends, nor is it that easy to scam Amazon's review system. The reason my book has so many reviews is because I offer a free copy of the sequel in exchange for an honest review. That's just sound marketing strategy. As for what people write, or how many stars they give me . . . they are in no way obliged to rate this book well, or say nice things about it to get the sequel. My exact offer is to get a free copy of the sequel in exchange for an honest review. I've given plenty of free copies to 2 star reviewers, and even a few copies to 1 star reviewers. The fact that I encourage participation from readers who might otherwise have let their thoughts go unheard is the reason many of my reviewers only have one or two other reviews on Amazon for other books and products.

If you don't like the book, I can accept that, but slandering my name is unacceptable. Try scamming the review system sometime, Clark, and you'll understand how impossible that is. I have exactly 4 friends whom I know in person that like to read Sci Fi, and a lot of the time even their reviews are deleted by Amazon. I have another 3 friends who are beta readers. As for the rest, those are real people making their thoughts known, just like you.
