This review is from: Doctor Who: Ace Adventures - Dragonfire / The Happiness Patrol [DVD] (DVD)Excuse the pun there, but I couldn't resist.
I know this doesn't come out for another 3 months yet, but I have seen both stories and I am reviewing them, not the special features.
I was pretty excited when I found out that this was going to be released, as these episodes are two of my favorite of what I have seen of the McCoy Era.
DRAGONFIRE is a very cool story (another pun, not intended), and it's also Mel's last story (Thank God!). I even in some ways like the cringeworthy cliffhanger at the end of part one, in which the Doctor is left hanging from a cliff from his umbrella. It's crazy.
THE HAPPINESS PATROL has a really weird concept, if I am honest. Basically, Happiness is compulsory, or you get 'put out of your misery'. The alien in this story alone makes it worth watching. The Kandyman looks like Mr Bassett gone wrong.
I must say, I am excited for the 17th May!

...Just to add, before anyone does - DON'T START ON THE FACT THAT I HAVE REVIEWED THE PRODUCT BEFORE IT IS RELEASED. I HAVE SEEN THE EPISODES, THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE BUY THE DVD FOR, SO THAT'S WHAT COUNTS. Sorry, I just had to say that, people who moan about the fact that you don't review how nice the covers are, or how good the extras are really get on my nerves.

Just want to point out not everybody buys them because of the episodes.I dont buy it for the episodes. I buy it for the extras mainly most of the time (sensorites and colony in space to name 2 stories for the extras over the episodes) . Oh and You put that you cant wait till may 17th but its released may 7th

Yeah, I know some people do, but I don't, I buy it to watch it better quality than TV broadcasts or VHS, and so do some other people. This review is for thoese people that actually buy it to watch the main feature, and not the special features. When the DVD comes out, I will edit my review, but for now I have just reviewed the episodes.
And, I know how childish this is going to sound, but there are three other reviews of this product, so If people want to moan, moan at them too!

Why didn't you post a review of the vhs version where it should have been... with the vhs product. I feel that you are misleading people.
You could have used the forums as well, so either you are a bit dim or a wind up merchant.
I just want you to know that I'm not laughing with you.

the problem with these "no reviews before release" people is that they have double standards, it's amazing how The Daemons release has 13 reviews and has a plethero of comments, yet not ONE person has said "oh you shouldn't be reviewing this until its released, i want reviews on sound quality blah blah blah" yet someone who does the same on this gets lambaseted, why? because it's not one of the "who shrine stories"? or is it because other don't belong in the reviewers "clique" just a thought for you all

It's pretty ridiculous to criticise a review of the main feature when the person writing said review has seen said main feature. I like reviews that cover the special features because they are one of the reasons I buy these releases, and of course there are people who buy a story they hate because the extras can be interesting, but most people are buying it for the main feature.
When it comes to Blu-ray releases or a same-format re-issue, of course you need to know if picture/sound/new content is worthwhile, but with a first-time release like this, which is unlikely to get a re-release even if there is a problem with it, why not just review the feature?
Plus, you see plenty of reviews written of products after release that don't touch on extras/picture quality/sound quality -- are they going to get laid in to too? Or ignored because it was posted after release?

The reviewer hasn't seen the DVD, he has seen the video. All these pre-reviews are from glory hunters. To review is to look back in hindsight and THEN give an opinion.
It was not that long ago that the k-9 box set came out, which had a mastering fault. That wasn't mentioned on any pre-review and so distorted the star rating of a defective product.
The review is to share information on a product and not to boast of your personal viewing preferences. What is wrong with using the forums if you want to critique and discuss?
