4.0 out of 5 stars Berlioz' operatic interpretation of the Faust legend, 15 July 2013
This review is from: La Damnation De Faust (LSO, Davis) (Audio CD)
This is one of a number of recordings that the late Sir Colin Davis made with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and a quite splendid array of principal soloists. The two- disc opens with tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini singing a short aria as Faust. The orchestra make a fine job of the Hungarian March that concludes Part I. The bass Michele Pertusi is sufficiently menacing as Mephistopheles, who plays a significant role in Part II. Marguerite (mezzo Enkelejda Shkosa) appears in the Part III on disc 2. I have heard more captivating Margueritas but tonally the singing is fine. And the final soloist is the student Brander, also sung here by a bass, David Wilson-Johnson. Overall, I found this to be a fairly satisfying performance, though it never came alive for me; it was released in 2002 on the LSO's own record label.
