This review is from: A Secret History of the IRA (Paperback)
Ed Maloney is without a doubt a well regarded Irish journalist but I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a reasonably professional insight into the IRA and especially not if you are interested in why they called a ceasefre and the Irish peace process. Those parts of the book dealing with the 1990s onwards and especially after the 1994 ceasefire are so evidently based on interviews with disgruntled IRA dissidents who oppose the peace process, trying to protray the IRA and Sinn Fein leadership as 'sell-outs' that it loses all sense of logic or narrative. Its basic and unsupported premise is that Gerry Adams sold out the nationalist struggle in a long running conspiracy from within the republican movement. There are much better and more professional books - even by authors who are hugely critical of Sinn Fein. Richard English's book for example Armed Struggle: The History of the IRA.
