This is not your traditional rom-com; in fact at times it is quite depressing! It is quite a slow burner and it feels low-budget/indie/arty but then that is ok as it is more about the characters and the plot rather than the production and I guess it works quite well. The film passed the time but at the end of the day I can't say I would watch it again. It is not a bad film but it's not a particularly great film.
There is promise; however it never quite reaches anything. The plot is ok but predictable and the "comedy" is hit and miss. Sometimes it seems that the film is trying to be a little bit too clever for itself and does not quite know which level of audience to aim towards. There is a lot of swearing in it as well, not always necessary to the plot. Perhaps it makes the characters more realistic? However it is not always needed. I don't mind swearing in a film but some people may be put off by it.
The three actors are good but I can't say I warmed to any of the characters as I found them quite frustrating and annoying, it was difficult to feel sympathy for any of them and the issues between them seemed to be glossed over quite quickly. Also the film ends really abruptly and it feels half done! I understand it is left open-ended for the audience to decide what they think happened next but I felt a bit cheated as I had sat through the film expecting some sort of end and didn't really get it. I wish I hadn't bothered!
Overall I can't recommend this film to watch, however I can't say avoid it. Sorry, this sounds like a rubbish review but the film is quite bland so I find it difficult to say much about it! At the end of the day I found myself looking at the clock wondering how long it had left and was quite deflated at the end of the film. The drama isn't good enough to keep you hooked and the comedy isn't funny enough to keep you laughing. I have to give it 3 stars as it is not great and it's not terrible. Avoid if you are looking for a laugh a minute comedy, but you might like it if you are looking for something to pass the time. However, ultimately this film is forgettable, it should be good, especially with the promising cast but at the end you feel a bit let down with it all.
