A must for people interested in modern poetry,
This review is from: Uncollected Poems (Paperback)
This is a book of over 150 pages of previously uncollected poems by R S Thomas, one of the major poets of the second half of the 20th century, who died in 2010. Most of them relate to his customary themes - notably, the way he believes Wales has been subordinated by the English; the heroic endurance of Welsh farm workers; the lack of soul in much modern science and technology and materialism; ecological concerns; and the reaching for an elusive God. The language is spare, at times almost prosaic, but concentrated and frequently very powerful. While a minority of the poems are not quite up to the standard of those in previously published books (hence the 4 rather than 5 stars), many are superb. This volume is a must for anyone interested in modern poetry.
