Starkly, frighteningly brilliant,
This review is from: The Road (Paperback)
Without a doubt, the most powerful read I've had in months. Anyone with an interest in good writing should give this book a go.
A father and son traverse a post-apocalyptic American landscape populated by murderous, cannibalistic scavengers. It's extremely dark, and the prose has a frighteningly stark music to it that remains incredibly beautiful; almost poetic in its intensity. It's hugely difficult to read in parts, but ultimately redemptive and - yes, I know it's a horribly cheesy phrase - life-affirming. No surprise that McCarthy is being tipped for the Nobel this year. The sort of book that makes you want to go back and read everything else he's done. Brilliant, brilliant, and brilliant again.
