This review is from: Get Carter [1971] [DVD] (DVD)
Quite possibly my favourite scene in film history - Michael Caine stepping outside a house, naked, wielding double-barrelled shotgun, as a children's brass band goes by.

That one scene for me is a classic british gangster moment (the best types of gangster moment) and sets the standard for all the other GB gangster moments to come later; like the meathook scene in The Long Good Friday and the car door scene in Lock Stock. Its poignant, understated, infinately memorable, wonderfully british and without doubt epitomises everything you need to know about Caine's character in this film - he just doesn't care! The only thing he cares about is taking bloody revenge on the people who killed his brother.

The great thing about Jack Carter though is the sheer coldness he adds to his anti-hero title, so much so that you wonder whether he's actually seeking revenge for his deceased kin, or simply following an unwritten gangster code that its his duty to brutally murder anyone involved in his brother's death.

For me a film like this will never be outdated, the way it captures (by chance or by utter genius) the gritty realism of the Town at that time, the feeling of hopelessness from the characters who live there and the grimy essence of the business end of Jack's work. From start to finish this is a masterclass in how to produce something brilliant out of absolutely nothing. Low budget - high class, this is something that Hollywood can only ever dream of making and something that served as inspiration to a whole genre in this country, in short I strongly suggest watching this, you won't easily forget it.

P.s - a special mention should go to the composer of the title music - uncomplicated but calculating, just like Carter.
