Surprised how good these are,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having never used a safety razor before, I'd had a good look round at the various youtube videos and tried to listen carefully as I could to the advice on how to use the razor (thank you geofatboy). I chose this one as the general feeling I found was it was for a begineer. I got it today and I just had my first shave with the razor with the blades it came with - now I am somewhat of a cynic about these kinds of things, and my main reasons for buying this razor were to get something that was going to effectively last me a lifetime, and be affordable but at the same time not wasteful (like disposables). Seriously, the best shave I have ever had; I am very, very surprised how good these things are - and feel somewhat silly for not getting one sooner. It did take me some time though, at four slow careful passes, and lot of lots of shaving soap on the face after each pass. I found the head clings on the face and you risk cutting yourself if you have inadequate soap on the face, as there are no 'lubra-strips' on these - and thank God there isn't as (I have never liked lubra-strips), with a regular disposable - which is what I started using years ago after I got fed up of paying extortionate amounts on cartridges - you don't get that muck all over you. As a complete novice (please bear this in mind), I do find that my face feels somewhat very slighltly irritated (probably as the shave is so close, and I my skin may need to adjust), but my face has that really 'clean' feel you get when you know you have had a good shave. I have used brush and soap for years so I am using a shaving soap dish from Boots and a artificial brush from Wilkinson Sword - which to be fair seem to do the job, and I am perfectly happy with them. I was given a badger brush (and sorry for the heresy) but I actually prefer the artificial. I do now have some fancy Taylor of Old Bond Street in the post mind you. I am not saying the other brands of razors and blades are better or worse, but to be totally honest I can't see much point of 'changing up' to anything else, for an expert shave. Only gave 4 stars as you need to make sure you disassemble the razor after use, dry and reassemble, then again I expect you have probably have to do this with all of them, but as I am a bit lazy, other than that I am extremely happy with this. Also I know it's not fashionable thing to say but I like the fact it's British too.
I have modified this review, to correct my comment about drying it. I am finding I actually prefer the way you can disassemble it, and ensure it is properly clean and dry, before storing away for the next shave. 5 stars, I will most unlikely be going back to modern razors - I just can't see the point.
