This review is from: The Balkans (UNIVERSAL HISTORY) (Paperback)
Mazower's evaluation of the peoples, politics and culture of the Balkans will come as shock to the typical British stereo-type of a corner of Europe scarred by violence, crime and racial hatred. Contrary, it has through its long history been charaterised by tolerance & pragmatism. It was the rise of the liberal view of the nation state, encouraged and moulded by the Great Powers, supplemented by patronising views of evangelical travllers, that broke this mould and tumbled the area into the parody it is in the western media today (hence the derogatory term 'balkanisation'). The Ottomans were far more tolerant of the people of the books than we superior christians could ever be (but that's another story - see the history of the crusades!!). A great insight, and very thought provking! A must buy for students of the area.
