This review is from: Harrington on Hold 'em: Strategic Play v. 1: Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments (Paperback)
I've always enjoyed poker but have recently started to try and learn the game properly. While Harrington on Hold 'Em assumes a basic understanding of the rules (seriously, you need to at least be familiar with the mechanics of the game), the writing is simple, straight forward and engaging without being patronising.
In all honesty - for a beginner at least - this needs at least 3 or 4 read throughs to properly absorb the mentality, the strategy and everything else that Harrington teaches. Some say his style is very conservative and tight, but for a beginner like myself, this is perfect. In many examples as well, he goes on to outline alternative strategies.
I played in my first proper tournament last week and applied much of what I thought I learnt in the book, and I could already see the difference in how I played. The only issue I had is that I couldn't take it all in i.e. tracking how people play, keeping track of the pot (something I kept forgetting to do...online it's done for you but naturally not when you're sitting at a real table!), and I'm a bit slow at assessing pot odds and outs. But I can see how it will help my game, and with practice I'm sure I'll be getting quicker :-)
If anyone is new to poker (and even if you're not, though I'm hardly qualified to comment on that one!), I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
As other reviews state though, this deals with the early to mid sections of a tournament - Book 2 deals with the endgame and heads up strategy, which is very different.
One final thought. The best thing I found was that the book has many many examples and it really pays (excuse the pun) to stop, read back over the problem and really work out what you'd do before you read Harrington's answer or suggestions. Just keep a thumb handy to cover the answer as it's too easy to read ahead by accident!
