Compulsive French Crime Drama - Unmissable,
This review is from: Spiral Series 3 [DVD] (DVD)
Spiral Series 3 approaches its conclusion on TV and like the other reviewer I'm impatient for the DVD. I came aboard with this series, determined not to miss another euro crime hit series, and its been unmissable, both for the compelling story - the hunt for a serial killer ripping prostitutes and other police/judicial/political/personal intrigues - and for the ways the French perception of crime fighting differ from the British model.
Gotta go back now and see the first two years, work out what I missed.
Murder, sex-trafficking, corruption, addiction, betrayal: Spiral is a breath of fresh air.

Series 3 has been the best Philster IMO. Having seen S1 & S2 this latest series with it's extra 4 episodes allows for so much more character insight. But you will love S1 & S2 too. Spiral has been great TV right from the off.

Brian Best says:
We have just finished seeing Spiral 3 and were glued to it for weeks, despite the gruesomeness. We were intrigued with the way the French cops deal with their prisoners - thump 'em first, then a good bit of terrifying and threatening behaviour to get an admission out of their suspect. SO unlike gentle British police who pussy-foot around, constantly conscious of not infringing on human rights legislation. Good old French - couldn't give a tinker's for all that, and instead, stick their fingers up to all of us, and somehow survive. This is their fascination for us; their uncompromising attitude; their Gallic charm. I loved this and want there to be another series. There are so many unaswered questions. Please; another series.

Brian there is going to be more Spiral. Series 4 starts filming in the summer. This time the main storyline relates to a terrorist cell.
The initial go-ahead for Series 5 and 6 has also been given. Although still pending final approval.

I enjoyed the 3rd series (though I have yet to see the 1st two series) but there are a couple of plot strands that never came to a conclusion such as what happened to Niko and the legal battle with the corrupt mayor. At the beginning I detested most of the main characters especially the cops as they came across as a thoroughly unlikeable bunch. I eventually warmed to Tintin and Gilou but still can't stand the lead female cop. She is much too aggressive, moody and I find it hard to have any sympathy for her because of her behaviour. The legal side of the story was very compelling with some very interesting characters especially Roban who is probably the star of the show. All in all Spiral is a fantastic show and I look forward to more. I will certainly get the previous series and to anyone who has already seen them, are they as good as this series?

"are they as good as this series"
Yes, pretty much. A bit more fast paced and claustrophobic air about them IMO. But then they only have 8 episodes for the story to start, develop and conclude. Not enough really.
The legal battle with the mayor was kind of concluded. Roban was taken off the case you remember. There was no point seeing the end result as it would not have included any of the characters we know. And I don't think we need to know what happened to Niko. In fact the fact that he got away is better. It's far more realistic to have the bad guys get away as sometimes they do! No-one likes to hear that but it is true of course.

"SO unlike gentle British police who pussy-foot around, constantly conscious of not infringing on human rights legislation."
What??? Just not true. I don't know what planet you're living on but it can't be Earth.
If only that were true. My guess is you've never been in the police force nor been under arrest or interrogated by the serious crime sqaud. I'm sure the British Police would be flattered by your idealistic view of them and at the same time laugh up their sleeves at your naive faith in them.

Useless review. The internet is full of superior written opinions of 'Spiral'. Amazon customers come to this page to check if the DVD is worth buying. For instance, does this DVD has any extras? if it has, what are they? And how are they?

Cheers. Finally got around to watching series 1 and 2 and they were both very enjoyable. Thanks for the info.

And you have been interrogated by the serious crime squad? Or you have you been in the police force?
I felt the police interviewing techniques in the Spiral were closer to Life on Mars than modern day policing; nowadays police interviews are recorded even by the serious crime squad.
