I thought I'd missed out on that...,
This review is from: I Thought I Was Over That (Audio CD)
The coming of a new Lali Puna album is always a source of excitement. Existing fans will know precisely what to expect, since their three previous albums all have the same distinctive sound. Newcomers should therefore probably try one of those (personal recommendation: 'Scary World Theory') before purchasing this retrospective of B-sides and remixes. Those who are already believers should snap this up.
The consistent quality of the tracks on this album is remarkable, although the last couple of remixes don't quite match the rest. Nevertheless you're still getting 15 or 16 great tracks for your money. The ones that stand out for me are the sublime cover of 'Together in Electric Dreams', which radically overhauls the original yet remains instantly recognisable, and the strangely moving remix of 'It's Not The Worst I've Looked'. Their early releases, many of which are now unavailable elsewhere, are a very welcome inclusion.
Lali Puna have become reknowned for subtle, understated yet remarkably emotive electronica. The layers of sound are carefully constructed and while the album makes an ideal soothing background, it becomes entrancing when you pay full attention to the detail.
