1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, loophole plot..., 2 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I'm not an expert of anime, but, I could call myself an expert of film and storytelling, owning 1200 dvd:s of all of the great directors.

The problem with this one is that a lot of time is spent on... nothing, nada, this that does'nt move the story, and above all, does'nt move YOU.

I saw the animé series "Elfen Lied" right after this and was totally knocked by the imaginaive storytelling of this one wich takes hold of the viewer and keeps the right at it for well over 300 minutes! This one is touching, gory, funny, emotionally challenging as well as psychologically deep. "The Girl Who Leaped Through Time" is bareley entertaining. It is shallow and uninteresting.

Sorry all fans of this film and this studio. If you want the real thing, go for "Elfen Lied".

I'm sorry, WHAT?! Are you comparing The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, a lighthearted coming-of-age fantasy story with only the length of a feature-length film to tell it...to Elfen Lied, a dark, sinister, gory psychological horror drama animé that has 13 20-25-minute episodes to tell its story?

I'm sorry, Daniel, this is pure, unadulterated comparison fail. That's like comparing Robot Chicken to Toy Story, or American Dad to Futurama, or Code Geass to Darker Than Black. I can only blame this on the fact that you probably have a really small pool of reference, as you admit that you're not much of an expert on animé. That I can respect, but the moment you throw the whole idea of actually reviewing The Girl Who Leapt Through Time out of the window in favour of devoting 2 and a half lines of text towards salivating over a completely different animé is just downright laughable.

In fact, looking at your review as a whole, I'm not exaggerating when I say that you spend less time actually reviewing what you said you'd be reviewing, and more time praising Elfen Lied. Not a whole lot of buyers are going to take your opinion seriously if you can't stay on topic.

Also, what do you mean by "the real thing"? Are you seriously going to generalise all animé based on one series that you like? You do realise that animé isn't a genre - it's a medium. Not everything in a given medium is the same.

Plus, owning X videos doesn't make anyone an expert on anything ... in other words, the whole review is tosh.

Absolutely - there's a difference between quantity and quality.
