Classic Album, Disappointing Box,
This review is from: Wish You Were Here [Immersion Edition] (Audio CD)There is no question that Wish You Were Here is a 5 star album, but this Immersion box set is over priced and a disappointment.
Firstly, at the time of writing, it costs the same as the Dark Side Of The Moon Immersion box, £84.99, but contains one less disc. At least the Dark Side box contained an extra CD of demos and alternate mixes, which made it a little more desirable.
Discs 1 & 2, the remastered original album and bonus tracks, can be bought for £12.93 as part of the Experience edition.
For your extra £70+, you get 2 DVDs and a Blu Ray disc, replicating the DVD contents. Therefore, if you have a Blu Ray player, the DVDs are redundant. There is no doubt, however, that this is where the holy grail is contained, with the release of the long awaited 5.1 mix of the album, in addition to the original 1975 Quadrophonic mix and concert screen films.
As with the Dark Side set, the rest of the box is filled with 'collectibles', most rather pointless and of 'cheap' quality. The two photo books are flimsy and lack much content, the scarf and marbles are pointless, & the print, collector's cards, replica ticket and backstage pass are interesting to look at once, but you won't need to return to them again. EMI could have left all these out and cut the price.
If you have an SACD player, I would recommend buying the SACD instead, which contains the 2011 remaster and 5.1 mix. Although it has to be imported, it is available from European online sites for around £30, including shipping. That way, you can still own the 5.1 mix and save yourself £50 odd quid.

I am afraid I have to agree, the box is much worse than the DSoTM set and neither can really be justified at this price. Collectors like myself will probably 'just about' justify the price but I doubt many more people will be picking up these sets. Especially with such disappointing extras.
The Live portions only offer up a teaser of what should have been included in its entirety. At least the DSoTM box included a full live concert and not portions.
If you can, get the SACD (or even the vinyl/2 disc CD experience set). There is very little to see or indeed hear in this collection.
A genuine disappointment and another lost opportunity.

And the marbles are just clear glass! Even tackier than the DSOTM box, if that's possible!

The thing is that most people don't have an SACD player, but Blu Ray players are much more common and people like me would love to hear the surround mix!
I hope they bring out a single Blu Ray with this!

Mr. C. G. Veitch says:
I have indeed bought the SACD, it was expensive but still cheaper than buying all of this extra stuff, which to be honest I don't want. The SACD is amazing, in surround sound it is how the music should be heard. The quality of the sound is amazing and the details in the music so revealing. The irony is the SACD surround version really does immerse you in the experience, at a cost, but still less than this set. I think the whizz kids that thought this idea up at EMI got it wrong and should have released this album as they did for the 30th Anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon, as an affordable SACD, that everyone can enjoy.
I should add in respect of the last comment, that the more recent and affordable Sony BluRay players do have SACD playback, so even if it is not hooked up to a home cinema system, the improved SACD sound can still be listened to in stereo.

Couldn't initially find the Hybrid 5.1 SACD version on http://amazon.co.uk, so tried amazon.de and found it there. I copied the ASIN number from amazon.de and searched for that (B0065MJ7RO) on amazon.co.uk and it came up with the required disc at £37.97.
