Excellent Bach playing,
This review is from: Concertos Pour Hautbois (Camerata Koln) (Audio CD)
This is an excellent disc of four concerti by Bach: the concerto for oboe d'amore BWV1055, the double violin/oboe concerto BWV1060 and two oboe concertos transcribed or reconstructed from other works. All are truly lovely, showing Bach's instrumental writing at its best and are excellently played by Camerata Köln. Their approach is akin to chamber music: a total of ten musicians plus the soloist (Hans-Peter Westermann, who plays superbly throughout) which gives the music a supple, dancing feel which is wholly appropriate and quite delightful.
I've not come across versions of these concertos that I like better - this disc (from 1993) stands up very well beside the classic 1984 recording by David Reichenberg and Trevor Pinnock, and I much prefer it to the Han de Vries set recently reissued by EMI. It is rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.
