From strength to strength............,
This review is from: Who Needs Who (Audio CD)
This album has more flow and less of the startling variety of their previous offerings but is of the same high standard. I have read elsewhere that the lyrical content appears to have been inspired by the break up of the relationship of the two founders of this fine band. However there is no trace of the spite or venom which have peppered other recordings by artists who have centred them on failed relationships. It is all handled in a very gentle adult manner and has an overall regretful tone. And thankfully Dark,Dark,Dark continues and goes from strength to strength. The band itself provides a tight musical backing to the sumptuous and varied vocal style of the impressive Nona Invie whose piano melodies anchor most of the songs. Clarinet, accordion and trumpet decorate several of the tracks to great effect weaving in and out as the songs develop. Several examples still exist of their innovative and sometimes off kilter style - track 1 contains an interlude akin to music used in a circus performance in the midst of a fairly delicate piano ballad, track 5 is based on unusual skittering accordion flourishes whilst track 8 I would liken to an updated mazzy star offering with an otherworldly feel. However at the moment track 9 is a particular favourite. All in all this is another wonderful album which has fulfilled all of my expectations. I feel it will be more accessible to a greater number of people compared to their previous recordings. Recommended. P.S. - there is a 'hidden track' (why not just include it as track 11?) which takes some 10 minutes to reveal itself.
