2.0 out of 5 stars An embarassing film for Spacey, 29 Oct. 2002
This review is from: Pay It Forward [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
I saw this film on the merits of Spacey, Hunt, and the kid who did the sixth sense. After all, with a cast like that and on such a role when the film was being made, how could you go wrong. To Spacey's credit, aside from Fight Club and Being John Malkovich, American Beauty was one of the best films of its year. Here's the scoop with Pay it forward.
This film is a classic hollywood softy that is sheilded by a nice idea but implemented so cheesily that you will actually find yourself embarassed for the actors. Do you know what I mean? Its when you sort of slouch in your seat as if the actors could see out of the screen and you don't want them to see you watching because you think that if they did see you, it would be such a horribly embarassing realization for them, that they would simply leave hollywood and go buy a ranch in Kansas. And I like Spacey and hunt and the kid (sorry kid, don't know your name) from the sixth sense, and I dont want them to leave showbiz.
When contemplating this film, consider for a moment all the things you hate about hollywood; I mean they still think its racey to make a film about a single mother, not to mention, their overly dramatic tendencies and the marketing to the intelligence level of 12 year olds.
My opinion, don't buy this movie. Sorry amazon, love your service, hate this movie.

Mike - they're long gone!

I thought the film was 2* as well, and I'm not American. It's a small idea that shouldn't have occupied an entire film, and we ended up with over-egging, and manipulative filler. Peder was right - all those years ago!
