Like most folk, I was dimly aware of the name Young Marble Giants, but had no idea what they sounded like, and had little inclination to find out. But iTunes Genius suggested that I would like them, I downloaded N.I.T.A liked it, and then went on to download this entire album which seems to be pretty much everything they ever recorded.
Basically there seem to be a laid back lady singer, a bass player and a keyboard player, they all feature on most tracks, but some tracks might lack one of them. All together they work well, however too much of the keyboards and it can be reminiscent of that overly familiar classic cheesy organ sound that grates quite quickly.
It is a mystery why these songs are not as well known as such eighties classics as Soft Cell, Yazoo, New Order etc, though they probably lack the big hooks to make them classic pop. Rather they evoke the feeling of Portishead, slightly askew and melancholy, but with a very human and enigmatic depth.
I have marked this down to four stars, as there are weaker tracks included, and some repetition, a single album of all their best stuff would easily have got five stars. Recommended.
