This year, I'm afraid to say, is Fifa 2008!,
This review is from: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3) (Video Game)
I've been a long time fan of the PES series, and so have many other people. The general consensus is that Fifa is simpler, with cartoon like playability but with the official club names and graphics. PES on the other hand was all about the gameplay, being very responsive and only rewarding you with a goal if you actually earnt it. If anything, the official names etc were almost irrelevant because all that mattered was the actual controls.
Well, it's all gone belly up on the PS3!
I have played PES '08 on the XBOX 360, own it on the PS3 AND own Fifa '08 on the PS3. For some reason Konami have really messed up with the PS3 version. Believe the criticisms. It is jerky, the backgrounds are terrible, the grass is crudely rendered and the whole interface is very, very annoying. Online gaming times out many a time and so forth.
Fifa '08 however completely throws my assumptions about the series out the window. The graphics are outstanding, the playability is more realistic than PES. My main gripe with Fifa is there are too many skills to perfect, but maybe that is my inadequacies as a player as opposed to a flaw in the game. Fifa, being an official product, contains up to date squads (which are updated online nearly every other day!) and has a BEAUTIFUL interface where there is constantly updated news from around the world (I knew about Totti being injured for the Man U/Roma Champions League game before even the BBC did!).
Fifa's online options are more advanced than Pro Evo's, with up to 10 people being able to play each other in the same game. PES can't even cope with 1 against 1 and here I am playing with 9 other people across the world!
I also noticed that the ball moves far more realistically in Fifa than in Pro Evo, which is quite a big deal. We all know how a football moves in reality, and that often dictates whether will run for a ball, and sometimes in Pro Evo you run for balls that in reality would be a lost cause but in the digital world is a 50/50. In Fifa, the ball's movement is perfectly captured, so you know how to judge it.
Any way, I ramble. I'm selling Pro Evo. I'm keeping Fifa. Annoying because I have to learn a new set of controls, but I'm man enough to accept the tide has changed this year. Konami better sort out this mess or more people will be changing teams next year!
