This review is from: Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Greatest Products (Kindle Edition)
Having already read the biography by Walter Isaacson, I was interested to see the Apple success story from another viewpoint - the key designer Jony Ive.
Glad to say I'm not disappointed. The book gives a brief but informative grounding on Ive's background including the influence of this father Martin Ives who formulated the UK schools curriculum for "Design and Technology". It then goes on to describe his progress through college and early career in design studios in London, before moving to California and Apple.
The background information on how the the key Apple products (iMac, MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad) were designed is excellent, and I now have a renewed appreciation for the determination, effort and sheer perfectionism that goes into making Apple products.
Without being awfully sycophantic the author praises (or quotes others) Ive's skills as a designer, and paints a clear and unambiguous picture of his personality and close relationship with the founder - Steve Jobs. Clearly Ives, quietly spoken, calm and reflective was a good contrast to the more volatile Jobs - and together they built a remarkable business empire which at it's core is just pure perfectionism.
It also adds some more background on the other key characters at Apple, including the quite remarkable (ever smiling) CEO Tim Cook.
The book helps explain why (despite the doom-sayers) Apple has thrived despite the tragic death of it's founder, Steve Jobs.
An interesting, fact filled and informative read, and (in my case) quite an inspiration to anyone working in design, whether it be software, hardware, database or Industrial design.
Well worth the read.
