Wonderful to have this well sung and particularly well conducted performance on DVD. Have only one slight regret that when Cox produced it at Glyndeborne many years ago with Soderstrom the costume designs were so much more twenties elegant. What a pity that that performance although televised is not on DVD.

Peter Simor says:
The acting and stage direction suffer from over emphasis. For instance the Italian bel canto singers act out a comic role, clowning, as if the audience of the Met wouldn't get the point and find the musical contrast quite amusing in itself. Renee Fleming sings wonderfully but she smiles the way Americans do; too much for classic European tradition, appearing unsubtle and lacking in discretion. The dance is desperately over done, for comic effect. This Blu ray recording could be heard with gre at pleasure with the picture switched off.
