5.0 out of 5 stars cage at his most beautiful, 7 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Cage - The Complete String Quartets, Vol. 2 /THE ARDITTI QUARTET (Audio CD)
John Cage's 'String Quartet in Four Parts' was the very first piece of his I heard, and it had me completely hooked. The music is incredibly calming and pure in both of these pieces, I was very lucky to find them both on the same CD. And the Ardittis are stunning all the time, you really can't fault them...

This CD is a fantastic way to listen to Cage for the first time. The only trouble is - these two pieces get you excited about discovering more of his music, but not that much of it is as good as what you'll hear here.

I guess the "good" music is a bit open to dispute. I understand that his quartets are very different from most of his other works but to say that his other stuff is not "as good" can be misleading.
Other than that I agree with you that the quartets are beautiful!

J. Higham says:
Yes, I agree with Bruno Pietoso. However, I liked your review, very well put and inspires me to look this recording out - buy it! Could I suggest that you look out for Cage: Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (this is just one version that I find particularly good*), and excellent record, and very accessible, if you don't know them already.

* = Just to add that this version comes and goes all the time, and so does the price! Keep an eye open for when they re-release it, I think it's normally £7 more or less. It's been re-edited several times already, classic stuff. Otherwise there are plenty of other versions out there.

The recording J Higham mentions has also been released in the 20th century series here
Cage: Sonatas & Interludes (20C series)

at a reliable and more constant price
