2.0 out of 5 stars (2.5 star) Slightly uneven sound, no subtitles, 20 Feb. 2011
This review is from: Blood on the Sun [DVD] (1945) (DVD)
James Cagney plays the part of Nick Condon, an American journalist working in Tokyo. He runs foul of the Japanese secret service by writing a story telling of the Army's ambitions to control America, China and the world. There's a couple of Judo fights, but let me tell you - Bruce Lee it ain't.

There's only the most basic of menu screens on this DVD - there's one choice: 'Play Film'. No Subtitles, or background to the movie. It's a cheap edition that could have been much better with a little bit of thought and budget. My copy had the occasional drop-out in sound which, judging by the production values shown, I was half expecting.

The film itself carries the whiff of propaganda, and typically old-fashioned portrayals of Japanese stereotypes. The settings are interesting as they seem to have been filmed on location, and the Japanese and Chinese language spoken from time to time is authentic.

Cagney's carrying quite a lot of extra weight, and seems to be doing his best with what isn't the most persuasive of scripts, probably because it's been produced by William Cagney (his father?). It's a very dated film of curiosity value only - not one of Jimmy's best.

Not recommended.
