Downton becomes a potboiler,

This review is from: Downton Abbey - Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)What a pity that the success of season one has made the writer and producers feel they have to turn this elegant drama series into a potboiling soap opera. By the end of the season there were more dramas and melodramas ,hysteria, tragedies and cliffhangers than one could poke a stick at with enough unresolved plots to fill a third season easily. What is sad is that the original series was subtle and didnt wind every plot to hysterical proportions. Now what it has turned into is a corny soap opera with good actors and push settings (and Maggie Smith of course who adds class to every word she speaks)
At one point Maggie Smith asks "have we all gone through the looking glass" and this surely must have been the reaction of the actors when they read these scripts. The worst insult? To end the season on a cliff hanger. Murders are the thing of low brow Tv and soap operas, I remember the fuss when "Friday Night Lights" went downmarket with a murder, but this murder that ends season two is so obvious and corny and the writers feel its strong enough to keep us glued to our seats to wait for season three?? (or the promised Xmas episode, though I am guessing that will deal more with the florid drama of the central lovers)
Guys -the series is a hit, did we need to go down this path? Season three needs to calm down and get back to basics, or I would guess it will lose discerning viewers and actors as well. !! Have another look at the original "Upstairs Downstairs" and see how they handled drama and keep a lid on everything, it could be a lesson well learnt.
