A mirror of Ligurian village life in the eighties,

This review is from: Extra Virgin: Amongst the Olive Groves of Liguria (Paperback)
I agree with almost all the adjectives used by the other reviewers (honest, affectionate, heart-warming, funny etc.). I should add that I found "Extra Virgin" penetratingly true, notwithstanding the characterizations - more than once bordering on caricatures - and the slightly exaggerated descriptions of local foibles. I share many of Ms Hawes' perceptions and experiences, being myself an outsider who has bought a country cottage in the same area. At the same time, as an Italian olive farmer, I share in the everyday life of my olive-growing neighbours. Her descriptions of property transactions, country roads, forest fires, village feuds and solidarity are truer than life. It would have a sobering - if not devastating - effect on my fellow countryfolks, were it to be translated into Italian. Thank you for your honesty, Annie.
