This review is from: The Spirit Level Delusion: Fact-Checking the Left's New Theory of Everything (Paperback)
The case as set out in the original 'Spirit Level' is initially convincing, but (as pointed out by this book) some of the statistics are open to challenge. The criticism, from my point of view as an economist and philosopher, is that the entire argument is founded on outcomes. I consider that the essence of human life is to flourish by having autonomy, and by our all being different rather than equal. We all want different things, and have different levels of commitment and effort; we therefore recognise the need to accept different outcomes so long as there is a reasonable safety level for the poor and the needy. As is commonly observed, life is a journey not a destination, and to simplify it into measurable statistics is to completely miss the essence.
