Studios MAKING $$$$$,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Downton Abbey - Series 4 [DVD] (DVD)
Downton Abbey - Series 4 [DVD]
If you purchase this UK version you will not get the complete series. The last episode is missing from this series. You have to buy it separately. If you don't purchase the extra episode events in the next series will not make sense. The US versions have all of the episodes. This is the studio making money & not informing the sellers of this situation.

Why do you think I am in America ???

I see now that you are in Australia but I am guessing the situation is the same. Did they show the Christmas specials on TV at the end of the series so that they looked like part of the series? Is that why you thought the specials would be on the UK series boxsets?
When I wrote my original comment, I was also replying to Eddie from Toronto's comment saying 'You will not get the complete series. The last episode is missing from this series.' I am guessing that after you watched the series in Australia with the special at the end, you thought the same thing?
Well, unfortunately this is not true. Despite what the US/Australian TV format suggested, the specials are not 'the last episode' of the series so they are not missing. They were individual episodes, aired and released at different times, so they were never intended to be part of the series boxsets which are complete, in the sense that they show the complete series as it was originally shown in the UK and each series had an ending in its own right.
The labelling on the DVD's could potentially be a bit clearer for international buyers who will naturally assume that the series is as it was shown on their local TV but the studios are not in a conspiracy or misleading anyone by calling this DVD boxset 'Series 4' because it's exactly that, the same Series 4 which aired in the UK. UK viewers are perfectly aware of the situation and would not, I think, be misled.
An alternative is, of course, to buy the US boxsets which include the specials as audiences expect but these DVD's are also edited in the same way as the show was edited for US TV, so certain parts of the material were recut and edited for time constraints.
My point, I guess, is that it seems odd to leave 1 star reviews and attack the studio for being out to make money when the product is exactly as advertised, nothing missing at all

Well I defy you or anybody else to sit down and watch the end of Season 3 which as I remember ends with the cricket match and then begin watching series 4 and be able to follow the storyline. For one thing a new character appears -- the young tearaway girl. The questions must be asked and answered 1. Where is Mathew a central character and 2.who is this girl.
Clearly you cannot do this 'experiment' since you already know the answers however much you might try to ignore them.
I stand by my star rating and 'attack' on the studio.

I defy anyone to watch the Series 3 boxset and then the Series 4 boxset and be able to follow it too because they are NOT consecutive. The order is Series 3- Christmas special- Series 4. But if you ordered the boxsets and did not know that, it is not the fault of the product, which is exactly what it says on the tin 'Series 4' or the studio. The series and specials were released on DVD in the order they were made and aired, no conspiracy, no deception so to rate the product so low or attack the studio for your mistake is unfair.

Just money making, then again Downton in my opinion has gone down hill since the very good first 3 series, all show and no go now.
