NOT THE BEST BUT NOT THE WORST!!,
This review is from: Doctor Who - The Ark In Space [DVD] (DVD)The jury is still out for me on this - the story is a bit muddled particularly towards the climax but the premise; Space station orbiting Earth and under attack by Alien Insect creatures is good and nicely claustrophobic. Baker is as mad as ever (my favourite Dr alongside Jon Pertwee) and Ian Marter & Liz Sladen are good but the rest of the small cast are a bit hammy! FX are low budget, but reasonably effective - The alien Wirren are well constructed, the model work for 1975 is ok, and there's even a fair stab at some Quatermass Experiment/Alien style Body Horror, as a hapless victim is slowly turned into an alien bug!
There are better Baker stories such as Pyramids Of Mars, Horror Of Fang Rock and Genesis Of The Daleks but this is far from the worst.
A bit average but still entertaining - perhaps The Wirren will be ressurected in a future series?
Slightly dissapointing for me on the extras front is that there isn't the hour long documentary that is often common to the DVDS's.
There is new CG FX (for the Space shots) that can be viewed on it's own or seamlessly integrated within the main feature. It's not exactly Star Wars but it's decent, and it only totals a minute or two's worth.
Personally, I prefer the original model work for the nostalgia alone!
