5.0 out of 5 stars Pete and Doug in the World Of Rubber, 17 Aug. 2011
This review is from: At the Earth's Core [DVD] [1976] (DVD)
Two Victorian inventors, Dr. Abner Perry(Peter Cushing) and David Innes(Doug McClure) drill their machine, an iron 'mole', into the bowels of the Earth and encounter the strange, underground world of Pellucidar, where a telepathic race of bird-like reptiles rule over human slaves and where wondrous beasts and carnivorous plants can be found round every corner. In fact, what they find is a race of men in rubber suits, ruling over a group of British thespians in loincloths with equally rubber monsters and Caroline Munro's bountiful cleavage to be found round every corner.
Having made fun of this film, I feel it is my duty to make clear that I love every cheesy minute of it. Okay, Cushing doesn't give one of his best performances, recreating his dotty take on Doctor Who, and Doug is looking a bit flabby for an action lead, but that's all part of its appeal. The sets are wonderful, one should expect cut price monsters in an Amicus lost world film and there is a truly memorable experimental soundtrack from Mike Vickers of Manfred Mann fame.
Despite the two leads being rather forgettable, there is compensation from Cy Grant giving a full blooded performance as Ra and Caroline Munro her usual alluring self as Dia.
The action never lets up for a minute and the film should delight most children with an ounce of imagination, along with many adults who remember and love these films from first time around. Not to mention rubber fetishists.
I really couldn't give a flying chicken if I read reviews that disparage this great film. It might be an artifact of its time, but it is a shining one at that. Sparse extras on this release include the original trailer and selected filmographies. 5 out of 5 for the film anyway.
