A Good Purchase With Reservations,
This review is from: Acer Aspire 5739G (15.6-inch LED, Intel Core2 Duo, 2.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB, 1GB Graphics, DVD-RW, Dolby Sound, Vista Home Premium, Webcam, WiFi) (Electronics)
I brought this laptop about 6 months ago - mine only has a 320Gb Hard drive so I presume this is a slightly upgraded model although all the other specs look the same.
I bought mine mainly to surf the net and write documents. It does these both with no problems (as any half decent laptop should). However, the keyboard is a bit flimsy. One of the keys fell off after about a month but it clicked back into place and has so far stayed put. I did buy an external one to use with it at home as I am a bit heavy handed with my typing. The rest of the build seems solid though and has so far stood up to the knocks I expose it to on a daily basis.
Also on the downside, it isn't exactly svelte. It's quite bulky and heavy but this might be a price you play for the graphics card.
I have no problem with the wi-fi as one of the reviewers has. Perhaps this only happens with certain routers. You might need to check this out.
I also purchased it to play occasional games on the go. Consequently, I chose this model because it has a 1Gb graphics card. It plays most recent games with little problem. Bio-shock played well with only a few graphic tweeks. Napolean: Total was is a bit jerky but I've seen that game jerky on better rigs than this.
The screen is nice and bright and doesn't suffer from glare as badly as some - my partners Viao is almost unusable in bright sunlight.
There is a touch sensative strip along the top of the keyboard that controls functions such as volume and switching wi-fi on/off, which is useful. The touchpad is as fiddly as they are on other laptops. I usually get a mouse out as soon as I can get it on a flat surface but as I said, it's no worse than any other laptop.
It's not the prettiest of laptops despite the fairly nice blue lid - my partners vaio is much nicer to look at but I didn't go for looks (I mean with laptops not partners).
Overall, a good purchase if you want decent power and aren't too bothered about looks.
