2.0 out of 5 stars If this is the best season of my life, then my life will continue to be painful..., 18 Sep 2011
This review is from: Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life (Audio CD)
I bought this audio book after being recommended it by my therapist. It arrived on time, but after that it proved troublesome.

I've been suffering from depression since I remember being conscious. I've read a lot in order to seek help for my mental health issues, which include anger, frustration, stress, anxiety, restlessness and an inability to concentrate. I have an analytic mind and am still seeking ways to relax. I thought that Mindfulness might help - it still might. However when I inserted the first CD into Tunes and tried to import it, it took the best part of 45 minutes. The same happened for each of the subsequent discs. Subsequently I synced it to my iPod Nano...

On first impressions, Kabat-Zinn's voice was reminiscent of a cross between Steven Hawking and Ray Romano; he sounded automotive and depressed, bordering on lethargic. I'm not a religious person - I can understand why people may benefit from religion but don't have any faith myself, despite being raised as a Roman Catholic. Ergo when he started to quote Buddha in his opening chapter, I was immediately struggling to listen without judgement.

Over a number of weeks I managed to listen to most of the book. Some tracks were scratched owing to the iTunes import process, which again didn't really fill me with a sense of calm. If this is the best season of my life, then I'd like a new one please!

It sounds to me like you need to actually do the practice of mindfulness rather than get too hung up on Kabat-Zinn's voice or itunes import process. Also, just listening to the book wont help - you need to follow the instructions!

I have had depression and mindfulness has certainly helped in banishing it and leading me to to happiness, relaxation, peace and joy. Its all inside you, if you know how to look. Ideally though you need to do about 40 mins per day to get the benefits, for me I really enjoy meditating each morning... every day is new on the cushion.

Repeat though... this wont work for you if you don't put it into practice!

It may help to do a weekend workshop in mindfulness or even a weeks silent meditation retreat to get an immersive feel for the power of deep contemplation.

I agree. I have just had the worst year of my life (2011) - depression, serious full body hives, pneumonia, finishing the year with stomach surgery. Mindfulness has been a real saviour to me

In my case I have read several books, carrying out the suggested exercises as presented, and more importantly incorporating mindfulness into my day to day life

It has been a real help and I am now looking forward to 2012

Hi there, I haven't heard this CD yet so I don't know what his voice is like. Just thought you might want to try some others - www.headspace.com has some 10-minute meditations which are an excellent introduction if you don't want to jump right in with 45 minutes. I also found the CD that comes with 'Mindfulness for Dummies' really helpful. Finally, it's not mindfulness, but this charity has got some great ideas for improving your own happiness - www.actionforhappiness.org
Hope you find something that helps you.
