The Dramatic Tale Of Orpheus.,
This review is from: Metamorpheus (Audio CD)
At first, I wanted this album to be another Midsummer Night's Dream and thought it wasn't quite as good compared to the earlier work. But, having listened to it many more times, come to understand the story of Orpheus and allowed Metamorpheus to exist on its own terms, I have come to think it is an excellent work.
There is an equal balance between guitar and orchestra and, where the guitar does play, it is played in the style of a lyre - Orpheus' instrument. The other thing to note about this album is that is quite dramatic and moves between very tranquil pastoral shades and the bleak atmospheres of the underworld.
The recording quality and mix is very nice to listen to although not quite as clear as A Midsummer Night's Dream. But, seeing as Metamorpheus is a more tragic affair, perhaps a thicker mix is called for.
I would recommend this album to any fan of good quality music, particularly fans of Steve Hackett and his previous acoustic guitar music.
