5.0 out of 5 stars The Way Action Movies Used To Be..., 17 May 2013
This review is from: The Last Stand [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
One of the great things about 'The Last Stand' is that it reminded me of the action films of the the 80s. Just lots of guns, violence, and wonderfully choreographed action sequences. It is just something that has been missing from all the so-called action films of the last twenty years.

For once it seems the writer has actually gone to the bother of creating a plot, and allows the film to build tension via the script, rather than relying in a constant stream of poorly constructed CGI. It is a proper action film with real stunts. However, it seems this element of realistic action is somewhat lost on today's younger generation, who don't seem to mind Hollywood's current obsession with bad CGI and "over the top" special-effects.

The Last Stand is well paced and perfectly structured as it builds towards a terrific third act, where all hell breaks loose. I found it very enthralling, and it is all topped off [spoiler] with a highly creative car chase through a bunch of cornfields.

Arnie is Arnie, and that is all you need to know. Yes, he is a bit wrinklier than we last remember him, but he is still the same Arnie we all know and love... and when he's asked "Who the hell are you?!" by a particular nasty thug. The hairs literally stand up on the back of your neck when Arnie states "I'm the Sheriff!" before blowing him away with a particularly impressive hand cannon.

After the appalling `Die Hard 5' we finally we get a film that truly understands what is required to make a great action movie. Truly exciting and wonderfully entertaining.

I actually commented something in a very similar vain on a AV thread site, i thought Arnie was great in this & The Last Stand is a breath of (old) fresh air. I now have to try look at DH 5 even though i liked 1-4...
