The Rules of the Game - Jean Renoir,
This review is from: La Règle du jeu [DVD] (DVD)Not speaking French and the film being subtitled does not of course help but, although highly rated by many, I did not personally end up feeling that this is 'one of the best films ever made', a claim made by a significant number of film buffs.
That said, it is an interesting film and has to be assessed in the light of prevailing political forces at work in 1939 Europe. Not unnaturally, by modern standards, the film is dated both in its acting and production but at the same time has some excellent shots. It needs to be seen / watched more than once if it is to be appreciated, at least I thought so. The story line is interesting and reflects human nature within the environment the film portrays.
