Quite Disappointing . . . . AT FIRST! !,
This review is from: Dragon Quest: Chapters of the Chosen (Nintendo DS) (Video Game)When i bought this game it was because i bought the PS2 dragon quest game and adored it. I had got a DS, 'The Curious Village' and 'Brain Training' for xmas. I decided it was about time i got a good old role-play adventure . . .you can't go wrong. When i opened it, really excited, started to read the 'bumff' I was SO disappointed when i read to my horror . . THE GAME IS ONLY CONTROLLED BY THE BUTTONS!!!The touch screen was a big novelty to me and i was heartbroken! I didn't play it for 2 days but got it out eventually.
It is so great when you get into it. It has a lot of charm , a lot more than the original 5 'chapters' once all the party join up. I won't go into them as others have and its on the box. You get to choose your party of 5. Walking on the map you can swap members mid battle at the start of each turn. When in towns/dungeons/caves you can't - just allowed the selected ones so choose carefully! I was unsure of where to go next at some points and also had to look at walkthroughs online to check a couple of things, I think thats to do with me being a bit thick though not the difficulty of the game as it was very obvious once I'd read where to go!! Its not that hard as long as you level up if you keep getting killed. It is tempting in later stages to use a spell called ZOOM to travel everywhere, where you arrive at your destination instantly but then you can't beat bosses/monsters cos your not levelling up. so you have a levelling session and then go to the next place and find you have to travel somewhere you haven't been before so have to walk and then have loads of battles which is the last thing you want! There are metal slime monsters that give a lot of Exp. so go on metal slime hunts - thats fun and very satisfying. There are a LOT of random battles but then there always is in this type of game.
A lot of the monsters are variations of the same monsters in different colours but there is a LOT of different monsters in the first place . . .if ya get me drift . .?? Lets move on then.
You get to go into a casino at a point in the game you get 2000 free tokens to play. The monster battle betting is great. Theres a fight between 2-6ish? monsters and you bet tokens on the outcome. I only win on that. Theres a poker game that i don't like at all, and the slotties. These would be good but after every spin it gives all the instructions again so i can't stand it! You then get to swap your tokens for items and weapons.
The storys really good and the graphics are good. I've given it 4/5 on both scores because of the impossible to play slots(I loved slots in DQ8) and the above normal random encounters, The button problem was not an issue at all once i got over the shock!! and the controls are really easy. I could play this for hours at a time.
I recommend you BUY THIS GAME!!
